Don't carry it into tomorrow

Anchor
““In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.”

— Ephesians 4:26-27 (NIV)

What it means

The lines on either side are practical orders: stop lying to each other just before, and whoever has been stealing should go to work with his hands just after. These are rules for people who lived close together and could not get away from each other, not advice about managing a mood. The opening words in quotation marks are not Paul's own. They match the Greek version of Psalm 4 word for word, and in Greek they are a command rather than a ban, so the feeling itself is left standing. The Hebrew behind that psalm line leans closer to tremble, which is why some Bibles read quite differently at that spot. The term behind 'foothold' is the ordinary Greek word for a place or a room, and it was also used for the opening you hand someone to act. The sunset line is read two ways, as a real deadline or as a common saying that meant settle it fast. The Jewish day ran from evening to evening, so on either reading the window is hours rather than weeks. Anger left overnight stops being something you feel and becomes something you live with.

In your life

Something went wrong today and it is still sitting in your chest. For one person it is a message reread four times and never answered. For another it is one line at home that landed badly, or a call about money that ended before anything was settled. Nothing here has to be decided tonight, only that you do not go quiet. Jesus told people to go straight to the person, and that conversation can still wait for daylight. Tonight only has to open the door, so that nothing hardens while you sleep.

Today's challenge

Send one sentence before you sleep

  • 1Before you sleep tonight, send one sentence to the person you are angry with, and keep the argument out of it: ask how their day went, or tell them you were thinking of them.
  • 2If nobody comes to mind, send that same one sentence to whoever you have left unanswered the longest, and send it before you turn the light off.
Prayer

God, I am angry, and you know exactly who it is about. I do not want to take this into tomorrow. Help me write the one sentence I keep putting off. If I am wrong somewhere in this, show me that as well. Keep me from saying anything tonight that I would have to undo.

Carry this today

I am reaching out with one sentence tonight rather than carrying this into tomorrow.

Common questions
Does Ephesians 4:26 say it is wrong to feel angry?

No. The opening words are a command in Greek rather than a ban, so they do not forbid the feeling. They also are not Paul's own sentence; they match the Greek version of Psalm 4 word for word. The warning is aimed at what you do with the anger next.

Is the sunset line a literal deadline?

That is genuinely argued. Many read it as an everyday saying that simply meant settle it quickly, others as a real cut off point. The Jewish day ran from evening to evening, so sundown was a real edge in that way of counting. On either reading the window is hours, not weeks.

What does 'foothold' actually mean here?

The Greek word behind it is the ordinary word for a place or a room. It was also used for the opening you give someone to act. The picture is handing over space in your own house to something that then settles in and stays.
