But Even If He Does Not
“If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”
— Daniel 3:17-18 (NIV)
Three men stood in front of a king with a furnace already heated. They said God could rescue them, then added four words that change everything: but even if not. Their obedience did not depend on the outcome. This is not confidence that things will work out. It is a decision about who they are, made before they knew how the day would end.
Maybe it is honesty at work that has cost you twice now. Maybe patience with a person who has not changed. Maybe prayer that has produced nothing you can point to. Those three decided before they knew the outcome, and you can decide today too.
Decide Before the Outcome
- 1Name one right thing you are doing that has not paid off yet.
- 2Say out loud: 'I am doing this because it is right, not because it works.'
- 3Ask a trusted friend to check in with you about it in a month.
Lord, hold me steady in this before I know how it ends.
I am doing this because it is right, not because it pays.
What makes but even if not so striking?
It separates obedience from outcome. They believed God could rescue them and committed to obeying whether or not He did.
Were they rescued?
Yes, and a fourth figure was seen walking with them in the fire. The rescue came after the commitment, not as its condition.
Is this about dramatic moments only?
The principle scales down. Most people meet it in ordinary integrity that costs something and produces no visible reward.
