Through the Valley
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
— Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
Middle Eastern shepherds carried a rod, a stiff club used to fight wolves and steer sheep away from cliffs. The staff was a long hooked stick to pull a sheep out of a thicket or guide it back when it wandered. David walked dark valleys but feared no evil because God's presence felt like that shepherd close by. Courage is one more step with Him beside you.
Tuesday 8:15 p.m. Lights low, worry loud about health results, bills, a relationship fraying at the edges. Your hands want to fix everything tonight. Put the phone down once. You do not walk this valley alone; Someone with rod and staff is already here. Take one small step tomorrow starts with tonight.
Walk One More Step
- 1Name the valley you are in, one honest phrase, out loud.
- 2Call one person and say: 'I am walking through something hard. Can you pray with me for two minutes on the phone?'
Lord, the lights are low and worry will not quiet. Walk beside me with Your rod and staff through this valley tonight.
What is one step forward you can take through the valley today?
Does through mean the valley ends?
Yes, you walk through, not settle in. God's presence sustains the journey.
What are rod and staff?
Tools of a shepherd, guidance and protection, not punishment.
How is this courage?
Courage is continuing faithfully while afraid, because God walks with you.
