Called by Name
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.”
— Isaiah 43:1-2 (NIV)
God speaks this through Isaiah to a people in exile — far from home, afraid. He does not say 'there is nothing to fear.' He says something stronger: I have already done three things for you. I redeemed you (bought you back). I called you by name (you are not anonymous). You are mine (you belong). Then a promise: when — not if — you pass through waters and rivers, I will be with you. The flood does not stop. But it will not sweep you away.
It is Thursday. By now the week has probably shown you something hard — a deadline, a health worry, a relationship crack. This verse is not a pep talk. God is not saying 'cheer up.' He is saying: I already bought you back. I already know your name. You are already Mine. Fear tries to tell you that you are on your own and nobody is coming. God's answer is: you are not on your own. The water will rise. I will be in it with you.
Say It Back
- 1Pick one thing you are afraid of right now — name it.
- 2Say out loud: 'God has called me by name. I am His. This water will not sweep me away.' Repeat twice.
Father, You call me by name. I am Yours. The fear tries to tell me I am alone, but You already promised to be in the water with me. I trust You today.
What water are you walking through right now — and where does God want to meet you in it?
