Led to Still Water

Anchor
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name's sake.

Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)

What it means

David wrote this. He had been a shepherd before he was a king, so he knew: sheep will not drink from water that is moving fast — they are afraid of it. A good shepherd finds still water. He also knew: sheep will not lie down unless they feel safe. So when David says 'He makes me lie down,' he means God makes me feel safe enough to rest. Then one more detail: 'for his name's sake.' God guides you not only because He loves you — but because His character is at stake in how He treats you.

In your life

It is the middle of the week. You are tired, but not resting. Scrolling is not resting. Collapsing is not resting. This psalm promises something else: a Shepherd who walks you to water that is still enough to drink from. If your week so far has been noise and rush, stop for a moment today and ask: where is my quiet water? Maybe it is fifteen minutes alone, a walk, a phone off for an hour. The Shepherd is not asking you to run harder. He is asking you to lie down.

Today's challenge

Find Your Still Water

  • 1Find fifteen minutes today that are quiet — no phone, no podcast, no voices.
  • 2Sit with one line of this psalm: 'He leads me beside quiet waters.' Let it repeat in your head, like a slow breath.
Prayer

Shepherd, I have been running on noise. Lead me to still water. Make me lie down. Refresh my soul today.

Reflect

Where in your week is your 'quiet water' — and when was the last time you actually drank from it?
