A Living Hope

Anchor
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Peter 1:3 (NIV)

What it means

Peter is writing to Christians who are being hurt for their faith. He doesn't start with a complaint. He starts with praise. Why? Because God gave them something they did not earn — that is what 'mercy' means. He gave them a 'new birth': a second life, a new name, a new start. And He gave them a hope that is alive. Not wishful thinking. A hope built on one fact: Jesus walked out of His grave.

In your life

You are at the end of a week. Maybe it held disappointment, a failure, a quiet regret. Read the verse again. God has already given you a gift you did not earn. Peter calls it a 'new birth' — meaning who you were on Monday does not have to define who you are today. And 'living hope' is not wishing things will get better. It is confidence that the God who raised Jesus can also raise what is dying in you right now.

Today's challenge

Name What God Can Raise

  • 1Write down one thing in your life that feels dead right now — a habit, a dream, a relationship, or a part of you.
  • 2Say this out loud: 'God who raised Jesus, I believe You can bring this back too.'
Prayer

Father of Jesus, the tomb is empty. You bring dead things back. Raise what needs raising in me today. I trust Your mercy.

Reflect

What in your life needs God to bring it back to life today?

Common questions
What does 'new birth' mean in 1 Peter 1:3?

It means God gives believers a fresh start — a new identity, not just a patched-up version of the old one. Peter says this is possible because Jesus rose from the dead.

Why does Peter call this hope 'living'?

A living hope is based on something that actually happened: Jesus came out of the tomb. It is not wishful thinking — it is confidence in a God who brings dead things back.

What is 'mercy' in this verse?

Mercy here is kindness you did not earn. Peter is saying: you did not work your way into this new life. God gave it to you as a gift.
